MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON - APRIL 2018 #87TH BLOGGING MARATHON THEME: EXPLORE THE FLAVORS - INTERNATIONAL BREAKFAST DAY 4 "Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince and Dine like a Pauper."    Today for breakfast is D for Dutch Baby Pancakes. Before we go to the recipe, let me assure you it has nothing to do with the country Netherlands or the Dutch. These pancakes, also called German pancakes, A Bismarck or even Dutch puffs were made first by Victor Manca in his cafe in Seattle, North America. His daughter named them Dutch Baby Pancakes where perhaps her pronunciation of Deutsch sounded more like Dutch. The confusion now is whether they originate from USA or Germany. We're in the 21st Century and basic amenities like water, power and garbage collection are missing in the second largest city of Kenya. Its a shame! We live in what's suppose to be the upmarket area on the island and we've not had piped water ever since my hubby's family opted to live in this area. We heavily depend on the borehole which is not enough for 240 apartments. Now I have to get up early and race with the clock to get breakfast and lunch ready, get the washing machine going, wash up whatever utensils I used, fill buckets with water and take a bath all before 10a.m. By the time the maid gets to work half the jobs are done. We in Mombasa are so lucky to have the beautiful Indian Ocean. Hubby and I spent the Easter holiday at the Bamburi Beach and every day it was a delight to walk on the beach. Though at time of the year the beach is strewn with seaweeds, believe me when I tell you that its a sign of a healthy sea eco system. When the tides is out, little puddles of water is where one can find sea cucumber, sea urchins, star fish and beware of the occasional porcupine fish and the numerous tiny blue jelly fish. Why am I talking about breakfast? The reason is that the Blogging Marathon group participates in the Mega Blogging Marathon twice a year. I participated in my first one last September where we made 26 protein rich dishes . For the #87th the theme is Explore the Flavors where one has the option of participating in the breakfast, street food,  Indian sweets, lunch box dishes for elders, kids lunchbox, no refined sugar or refined flour, no onion no garlic and wholegrain. Enkare Nyrobi - Cool Water        I've been spending some time in the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi. Nairobi gets its name from the Masai phrase Enkare Nyrobi which means cool water. It perhaps was names so as its got the Nairobi River flowing through it. However, the river is no longer what I remembered it as. Its polluted and the flow has reduced due modernization.  I was born and brought up in Nairobi but have been living in Mombasa for the past 35 years. Usually when hubby and I are traveling abroad, we do not bother to come into the city and prefer to catch our connecting flight. The traffic in Nairobi is a nightmare in spite of all the new highways and numerous inner roads. The new roads are not able to cope with the ever increasing number of cars on on the road. The Holiday State    February is when Shhh Cooking Secretly group (started by Priya of Priya's Versatile Recipes ) had a virtual tour of Goa. Its been over 30 years since I've visited Goa. I remember when we were passing the town centre, there was a huge crowd of people. We asked the taxi driver what was going on and he replied "koi naya actor ki shooting chal rahi hai, aap ko dekhna hai?" he asked. We asked if he knew the actor and he said no so we didn't stop to watch. Who was the new actor? None other than Shakrukh Khan shooting for the movie Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa!    I remember we were staying at some hotel in town and would go to the Taj Holiday Resort to get onto the beach. Back then there were not many hotels. I remember getting to the beach and for miles there would hardly be anyone.
