Land of the Dawn Lit Mountains    As I had mentioned last month, The Shh Cooking Secretly group started by Priya Suresh of Priya's Versatile Recipes is traveling round India state by state. Not physical travel, but cuisine wise. For the month of October participating members had to come up with dishes that are popular in Arunachal Pradesh with the given secret ingredients.    This state wise cooking is opening up a whole new world of cuisine for me. I'm learning new names of dishes, new ingredients and different cooking methods. Food in Arunachal Pradesh in general does not have much oil unless its a fried dish and they depend largely on ingredients grown or available locally. People of Arunachal Pradesh love their meat and bamboo shoot. Rice is a must with any meat or vegetable dish. Arunachal Pradesh is a state with 4 main regions and 26 major tribes and over 100 sub tribes. Dishes will vary according to the tribe and availability of ingredients.  Arun...

Include Millet In Your Diet Theme: Cookies For Your Sweet Tooth BM#81 Week 2 Day 3    Today has been such a horrible day for me. I wait till 9a.m. for the maid to turn up. I had planned so many Diwali cooking and baking items but didn't get even one done. She turns up after 9 and goes and sits down. I was a bit annoyed so didn't say anything. After a few minutes I hear long sighs... what a brilliant way to attract attention. I go to her and she tells me she is sick. So I tell her to go back home and rest and come back when she is well. She continues to sit there. The softie me asks her if she needs a cup of tea. She says yes. So I make some tea for her. She sips on the tea and then asks for money as she needs to go to the doctor. I really was mood spoilt by now... its not the end of the month and already she owes me quite a bit of money. She leaves.     I start tackling the housework. By mid morning I am so annoyed and lit...

MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON -SEPT 2017 #80TH BLOGGING MARATHON THEME: PROTEIN RICH DISHES DAY:13    Plastic is becoming a mega concern world over as the land and oceans are getting littered with this 'we love to use it so much' product. Low production cost, easy to manufacture, versatile, impervious to water, easily moldable, has made this product so popular world over that its used right from pins heads to space ships. Its replaced wood, metal, glass, ceramic, paper, stone, leather etc. However, misuse of plastic has caused it to become as one of the major environmental threats to the world. Its alarming that minute particles are making their way to our food. Both land and sea animals are ingesting plastic and this in turn is landing up on our plates.    You might be wondering why am I talking about plastic here instead of food. Well, as some of my ardent followers know, my blog is not just for recipes but its also where I share news, my experiences ...

Happy Uttarayan Guest post for Pushpita Aheibam     Come fly a kite      And watch it sail     Across the sky,     Waving its tail.     By Jean Warren    Once again it Uttarayan or Makar Sankranti. Uttarayan is the Gujarati name for the festival celebrated all over India. Be it Pongal, Lohri,Magha Saaji,Suggi,Ghughuti or any other name, it basically celebrates the transition of the sun from the Tropic of Capricorn which is in the south part of the world to the north. It marks the ending of the winter solstice. The festival is also dedicated to the Sun God. It marks the end of the evil Poush (Kamudta) month. It is believed that Bhisma Pitah in spite of being on a bed of arrows and in grave pain, waited for the sun to be in Uttarayan to willingly die. Its also the period when the Gods awaken from their deep slumber. This festival is celebrated with a feeling of anticipation, joy and jubilation.        Guj...

579. Keri nu Shaak (Mango Curry)

Image
Making it after eons        Keri nu shaak was an all time family favourite when I was growing up. My mum would make a huge huge amount of this curry and we all would relish it with some parathas. We all would fight for the mango seed (or gotalo as its called in Gujarati). It was fun to suck out all the gravy from the mango seed and then dip it again in the thick gravy and suck on it again. Its one of the simplest and yet the most tastiest curry. Is it childhood nostalgia or the curry itself, don't know but I love it. It goes well with parathas and even khichdi. Every time mango season would start, family members would pester my mum to make it and we were a huge family. Some people add sun dried vadi to it, some add onion and garlic.       I prefer it just the way my mum made it. My daughter loves it too and had requested me put up the recipe on my blog. I forgot about it till the next theme on #FoodieMonday#Bloghop was decided. Our 51st theme is #...
