727. Undi (Pundi Gatti, Oondi or Rice dumplings)

Delicious Dumplings    A visit to Phoenix Mall, Bangalore is like a dazzling visit to Fairyland. Only thing is that nothing is free, you need oodles of money to buy whatever you want. I remember when I was studying in India in the 70s, nothing much was available and relatives and friends would have a long list of things they'd want us to bring for them from Kenya. Tables have turned, everything is available in India right from Rin soap to Audis. For a girl who comes from the supposedly second biggest city in Kenya, the malls are like paradise for me. Visiting Foodland is a foodie's dream but unfortunately everything from lettuce to wheat pasta is overpriced. Eating healthy is an expensive habit. Wonder why?? Healthy foods should be pocket friendly. Anyway we can argue about food prices world wide endlessly and get nowhere. Lets face it food is expensive.    Daughter and I were at the mall to catch a movie. Have you seen what PVR charges for popcorns??? For a handful ...

548. Rice vada

Family Time    The week passed by so fast, its already #foodiemonday #bloghop day. Our 33rd theme is #rice. When the theme was decided, I bought the ingredients to make a coconut rice pudding. But during the course of the week the rice was not used for the pudding but for vadas. When family visits, its food, food and more food. Its been really nice to have my dad, kaka, kaki and foi here. In between going out and having long chatting sessions, I try to cook something. I decided to make vadas as I wanted to make a quick but satisfying snack. Accompanied with a coconut chutney, this snack is perfect to take the edge off the nail biting  Twenty 20 cricket matches that are going on right now, to serve as breakfast, or as a side dish for a lunch or dinner. This is going to be a very short post as I have to rush out in a while. RICE VADA Makes approx 24 For the vadas : 2 cups cooked rice ½ cup finely chopped onion ¼ cup chopped coriander (dhania) 2 tbsp chickpea flour (be...

58. kachri bateta

Street food from Mombasa  Some years ago kachri bateta was a very popular street food in Mombasa. These days we hardly see any of them around in town or at Lighthouse with their little glass covered cart. Now we find sausages and chips in these carts. Whenever we came to Mombasa for a holiday and stayed at Manju aunty's house in Old Town, kachri bateta was our tea time treat. Back then we were served this on layers of old newspaper. Loved the tangy and crispy dish. The vendors made the potato curry  pretty dry. A few weeks back I read in Coastweek that kachri bateta was also sold outside Naaz Cinema for moviegoers to have as a snack. Nowadays no kachri bateta and even Naaz Cinema is going to be demolished. :( I make my own version of kachri bateta and it is quite popular with my friends and relatives, especially all those who do not live in Mombasa. KACHRI BATETA Yields 6 servings For the curry: 5 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks(approx. 4 cups of cubed potatoes) 3 ...
