Beauty is in the eye of the beholder    Every Tuesday, the members of Foodiemonday/ Bloghop group wait in anticipation to see what a fellow member will suggest as a theme for the coming week. We all take turns in suggesting the theme. For the #132nd theme Mallika who blogs at A Foodie Housewife had to decide the theme. She suggested Edible Food Art and also gave us some examples. So some of us said no to the theme and some of us immediately said yes. Usually the majority win. All who said yes immediately, slowly began sending messages that they are not artistic and have no clue how to go about this theme. I was one of them. What came to my mind first was a pretty shaped bread, but then I do that now and then. Then I thought of cookies and seriously couldn't go through the stress of icing in my super hot kitchen... yes its just too hot in Mombasa! Finally, I decided to challenge myself with a nicely arranged food shapes which normally all mothers do to make their kids eat. ...

A Belated Happy New Year    A belated wish is better than none, so a belated Happy New Year to all my friends, family and followers. I've been on a no blogging much required vacation. Sometimes its truly relaxing just to turn your mind off from blogging and any blogging related activity.     Hubby and I were supposed to spend Christmas and New Year with my son, daughter in law and her parents. We were on our way to Bali when we received a message from my son that Elodie my daughter in law had met with a motorbike accident. The remaining 4 hours of flight were stressful as we had no idea what had exactly happened. On landing at Denpasar, Bali, we had to head straight to the hospital. After tests, scans and whatever procedures were required, she underwent five hours of surgery. Her jaw was fractured into 5 pieces which the surgeon had to put together without damaging her nerves. However, looking on the bright side we got to spend a lot of quality time with them an...

Food on Sticks is fun     The 109th theme for FoodieMonday, Bloghop is On A Stick decided by the initiator of this group Waagmi who blogs at Cooking is Funn . Just a few days ago my daughter in law posted some photos of their visit to Kuala Lumpur. She showed us food stalls serving all kinds of food on sticks or skewers. While most appeared to be meat and fish based, I could make out a few sticks of veggie stuff.    Serving food on sticks or skewers is fast becoming popular at Bars, Lounges, Dinner Parties, Cocktails,as Street Food as people don't want to get their fingers dirty and food on sticks or skewers does look pretty, colorful and tempting.    Just a few days ago I posted my paneer and naan bites . Its such a great way to enjoy tandoori paneer with tiny pieces of naan. For this theme, I was finding it difficult to choose what to make..... paneer lollipops, cauliflower Manchurian on sticks, fried baby corn, paneer tikka, even an ice lolly...that's fo...

A quick dessert fix Theme: No Bake Desserts BM#78 Week 3 Day 2    I must admit its all these theme based cooking that is motivating me to either prepare bookmarked recipes or try out new recipes. I've come across so many mug cakes but never really bothered to try them out. For the No Bake Desserts theme, we are suppose to make a dessert which we would normally bake in a convectional oven but not bake it in an oven...confused?? Basically no using a convectional oven.     Taking advantage of the abundance of berries available in the markets in Montreal, I decided to make a mug cake in the microwave oven instead of using the convectional oven. I must admit I still love my 'properly' baked cakes but as a quick dessert treat... and I mean really quick, mug cakes are not a bad option at all. Even my sone was surprised that I could bake a cake so quickly. Last week when we went to the supermarket, I was looking for brownies to prepare my other no bake dessert and ...

Happy Holi Everyone   Any festival celebration means food and lots of it. Food, fun, colour, rituals all make a successful celebration. If one is missing then the celebration or festival is not complete. Our #FoodieMonday #Bloghop group decided on #Holi as our 83rd theme . With Holi it means that I've been with this wonderful group for now a year. My first post for the group was a fusion Holi theme . I remember preparing the dish not knowing exactly how it will be received by the other members of the group. Must say they were a friendly group and immediately felt as though I'd known them for years. Its been a great journey of learning new recipes, new cuisines, how to improve photography, drawing strength from eachother in times of need and sharing our lives.       We are constantly chatting over whatsapp in spite of the different time zones. When its our bedtime, Preethi all the way from Singapore will send us a good morning message. When we are awake, Rupal in US ...

HAPPY NEW YEAR     Write it in your heart that every day of this new year is the best day.           A new year has begun, time to reflect on what we achieved last year, what we didn't and  what we would like to achieve. Like every year I continuously make a resolution to lose weight, which so far I haven't; not get so emotional if my kids don't call regularly, which is pretty difficult to stick by and have more patience with my hubby's weird, out of this world ideas. However, I still get angry and try to retaliate them with all my energy :)     This year I've not made any resolutions as I forget about them even before the 15th of January. Desserts, chocolates, good fried food, chaats still tempt me to no end. Perhaps I will try and take baby steps or make small mindful changes every day. However, it can only work if I continue with the change and not forget about it after a day. Lets see how it goes.    But changes I...
