Celebration Time     I joined the #FoodieMonday#Bloghop group in the month of March when they were on their 31st theme. This week we are on our 50th theme...wow. Its time to celebrate. Celebration is usually with something sweet. The group decided on #Traditional Sweets. I decided to make an authentic Gujarati mithai (dessert), mohanthal. I get a bit nervous when I have to prepare traditional Indian sweets. I would have opted for easier traditional sweets like shiro (sooji halwa), lapsi , shrikhand , basundi , but I've already posted those. Had Mohanthal and Magas on my 'to do list'. I decided on Mohanthal as I prefer that to magas.     Before I go into explaining how to make mohanthal, I must tell you a bit about the #FoodieMonday#Bloghop group. Right now we are 10 members. One stays in US, one in Singapore, five in India, one in Qatar, one in Scotland and I live in Kenya. So how do we decide on the theme every week? Our life saviour is Whatsapp. As soon as everyone h...

Bura na mano holi hai    Its a bit early to post Holi recipes but I've just join a new  group #Foodiemonday #bloghop. Every Monday we post a recipe based on the chosen theme. The 31st theme is #Fusionthandairecipes. Its really really hot in Mombasa and the only thing I could think of was something extra extra cold. I decided to make kulfi with my thandai masala. Taking photos was not easy as the kulfi was melting too fast.               Holi, a festival of colors is celebrated by Hindus worldwide. In India its mainly celebrated by throwing, applying, drenching friends and families with different colour powders and coloured water. The true reason for celebrating is lost in all the colour throwing, drinking and partying. In reality, the eve of Holi also known as Holika is when an effigy of Holika is burnt to celebrate the triumph of good over evil. Prahlad, a devotee of Lord Vishnu did not burn in the fire while his aunt did(who ha...

530.Coconut barfi

A hard nut to crack!   When one thinks of coconut, the first thing that comes to the mind is the cool healthy coconut water. However, there is more to a coconut than just the water or the succulent flesh. Coconut milk, coconut cream, coconut oil, grated coconut, coconut flour, are all used in cooking in many countries. Right from sweet to savoury dishes, coconut is used to add flavour, creaminess and a bite to any dish. Curries, desserts, cookies, cakes, salads, drinks etc, name it and coconut is used. Coconut milk is used in place of dairy produced milk by vegans. Coconut water is rich in potassium and is considered a natural hydrator. Coconut flour is made from the flesh of the coconut. It can be replaced partially in baked goods to reduce the glycemic index. Coconut oil is used for cooking, for treating certain skin disorders, for preparing beauty products and for luscious hair. The shell is used to make decorative pieces, used as dishes and bowls and to burn as wood for cooking...

Image
double treat The Sweet Fantasy Club's  # 5  challenge (started by Preeti of  simply tadka ) was chocolate barfi and eggless chocolate crepe with strawberries. The word barfi reminds me of Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. Just can't help it... loved the movie. Barfi (Murphy) and Jhilmil were just fantastic, innocent and reminded us that basic happiness and laughter in our lives is very important.   For eons the recipe for barfi has been gathering dust or rather the page has turned yellow. Its my phobia of making indian sweets. So when the challenge came up, dug out the recipe and made the chocolate barfi. My hubby and I both love chocolate so I made a double chocolate barfi (notice the thick layer of chocolate on top :). Making barfi is no big deal, wonder why I bought ready made ones when in a jiffy yummy home made ones are more delicious. I made the barfi using ready made mawa (khoya). I made them as a treat for Valentine's day and have to make another batch soon. ...
