Love this recipe    Its Monday and yes you've guessed right.. its #FoodieMonday #Bloghop day. Our #98th theme was chosen by Saswati who blogs at Delish Potpourri . Saswati's got a beautiful blog full of travel stories, a variety of recipes from different parts of the world and I love her desserts. She suggested #CWFB which means Cooking with a fellow blogger. For this theme we had a choose any recipe from a fellow blogger in our group. I have so many recipes bookmarked from all these members, it was difficult to choose which one to cook.    Sticking to my healthy cooking as far as possible, I narrowed it down to 2 recipes that I've tried and made again and again. One is rava kara paniyaram from Saswati's blog and the other is beetroot appe from Sujata's blog Batter up with Sujata. I've made both these a number of times and the reason I decided to make the beetroot appe is because I had just bought some fresh beetroot. I made them for Sunday brunch and serve...

Grandparents      Grandparents love to spoil and pamper their grandchildren. In their eyes grandchildren are perfect angels. Right now my daughter is getting pampered by my dad and my 3 fois (aunts). They have gone there for a week. They reached Bangalore yesterday and are already feeding all sorts of goodies to my daughter. She is enjoying all the attention. When I was growing up I really didn't know my maternal grandparents that much as they were in India and I in Kenya. I met them occasionally when I was studying in Mt. Abu. I grew up in a joint family with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, the works. My grandmother didn't believe in pampering but I learnt a lot of things from her. My grandfather on the other hand loved pampering us. Making leftover roti ladoos, sharing his special recipe of jalebi and milk, doubling our savings on diwali day, giving us pocket money. I always remind my children that they are very lucky as they got to spend time with both sets of g...

yet another gujju snack   Whenever any of my blog followers want a recipe, they just write to me and I am glad that I get all these requests. It gives me the opportunity to bring out the old recipes and wipe out the cobwebs. Fried snacks are hardly ever made in my house considering we are just 2. Its only when I have guests that I make fried snacks. My cousin requested for the dhebra recipe and sorry it took a while. I had the recipe but had to make it to photo the end product. Now that took a while. In the meantime the maize flour, millet flour were all patiently sitting on my kitchen counter. Finally got down to making them yesterday and they brought back a lot of memories especially of my mum. She would make tonnes of dhebras for our huge family all by herself. Its my favourite snack, but then I love all fried snacks or farsan as we call it. Some gujarati communities call them vada but we Patels call them dhebra. How do you distinguish them from the other methi dhebras we make.....

kenyan diet    Ugali or sima as its called down at the coast is a very healthy meal which unfortunately no longer is a part of the daily diet for so many young Kenyans. Sausages, chips and other junk foods have become more convenient and appealing. However, it is still the basic meal for the common man. Ugali is made from white maize flour or what is commonly called here maize meal. Filling, full of good carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins, ugali is very easy to prepare. I learnt how to make it from my house help Julius. However he still thinks I don't know how to make it. But shhh, I do prepare it on his days off. Ajay loves ugali and we tend to make it often.  I serve it with chicha (amaranth) and fresh red beans, sukuma wiki ( kale), cabbage vegetable or Neel's orange dal . Most Kenyans have it with any meat, fish or vegetable dish. You can prepare the vegetable or meat dish ahead but make the ugali just before serving.    Some homes make the ugali and ...
