Enkare Nyrobi - Cool Water        I've been spending some time in the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi. Nairobi gets its name from the Masai phrase Enkare Nyrobi which means cool water. It perhaps was names so as its got the Nairobi River flowing through it. However, the river is no longer what I remembered it as. Its polluted and the flow has reduced due modernization.  I was born and brought up in Nairobi but have been living in Mombasa for the past 35 years. Usually when hubby and I are traveling abroad, we do not bother to come into the city and prefer to catch our connecting flight. The traffic in Nairobi is a nightmare in spite of all the new highways and numerous inner roads. The new roads are not able to cope with the ever increasing number of cars on on the road. During this stay in Nairobi, we've been visiting several malls and other places of interests and I must admit though I've grown up here and have in previous years driven myself around, I'd now ge...

679. Chilli Mojito

Refreshingly Chilli    Its time to post the Fantastical Food Fight recipe. For the month of August Sarah wanted us to use Rum in our food preparation. When the word Rum is mentioned I think of my favourite Rum and Raisin Cadbury Chocolate. But nowadays its difficult to find it in the supermarkets in Kenya.    So what is Rum? Rum is a alcoholic beverage made from sugarcane juice or its byproducts like molasses. The juice or byproducts are fermented and then distilled. The liquid is then aged in oak barrels.    I wanted to make some rum and raisin muffins but my hubby and son still don't want me to make anything sweet. So the next option was a cocktail. Nothing innovative about that but then its my first cocktail recipe on the blog. I love my cocktails but don't make them at home for myself. When I'm in UK, large family gatherings means alcohol flows. Its wine, beer and cocktails at home. When I go out with friends we enjoy some cocktails or wine. How...

673.Vegan Mixed Berries Ice Cream

Just the right time to have ice cream    It has been really hot for the past few days in Montreal. Its humid and just the kind of weather all Canadians enjoy. People are out walking, jogging, having picnics, swimming, sailing, lazing in the sun. Hubby and I want to be indoors as the sun is too much for us. My dad is here, his first visit to Canada. He is from London, so he too is enjoying the really sunny hot days. When I run for the shade, he thinks I'm mad. So I had to remind him that I get more than enough sun back home in Mombasa, so I'd rather enjoy the cool or cold weather.    Anyway, its the right theme that Sarah Ellis has chosen for this months Fantastical Food Fight . The theme is Ice Cream. I went through so many options to make the ice cream for this theme, but the abundance of berries just kept on beckoning me. A couple of weeks ago, we saw this documentary on veganism. I'm not totally convinced to give up my dairy products...love cheese and yogurt too m...

659. Peaches and Cream Oatmeal Cups

Peaches and Cream Day     Did you know that 21st June is celebrated as the National Peaches and Cream Day in USA? Well, I didn't know till Sarah Ellis initiator of Fantastical Food Fight suggested that for the June theme we should prepare something with Peaches and Cream theme. It also marks the beginning of the summer solstice. Its more popular in the south as peaches are in season in June in the states of Georgia, Florida, California and South Carolina. How this day came about is unknown.     As the name suggests this dessert is very easy to prepare. Its peaches served with whipped fresh cream. The simple dessert is so delicious that I was tempted to just make this simple dessert for the post. What stopped me was the cream part.. it would not do too well on my hips and ever enlarging tummy (hate menopause!).     As a not too healthy and not too sinful dish, I decided to make peaches and 'cream' oatmeal cups. I replaced the cream with some heal...

647. Cherry Cobbler Parfait

Precious Cherries     For the month of May,  the Fantastical Food Fight theme was Cherry Cobbler. As I read that, I thought here's another month I'll have to sit out (last month was BLT and being a vegetarian B was certainly out for me). I asked if I could use glaced cherries and the reply was yes. However, wasn't feeling too happy about using them. So I waited practically till the last minute still deciding what to make. The charming thing about this group is that you don't have to participate monthly. Last Saturday I went to the local vegetable shop and I saw a whole big carton of cherries smiling at me. I asked the price and nearly fainted. Cherries are not tropical and so they are imported from South Africa or where ever! These days it baffles me to see Parathas from Philippines (I thought that was a rice eating nation), Oats from Turkey and just lets not get into what the Chinese are selling to Africa.   Getting back to the precious cherries, I shopped for the...

Peanut and Fruit Salad(Chaat) #Fantastical Food Fight Trying to eat healthy        When you're a food blogger and food is your passion, its pretty difficult to stay away from all those tempting recipes out there in the cyber world and cook books. I get tempted to try out so many recipes and the more calories it has the temptation level is that much higher!          Recently I joined this group called Fantastical Food Fight . I got tempted to join after I saw the absolutely tempting cookies made by Karen of Karen's Kitchen Stories . After I oooooogled at the photos till I was drooling, she suggested that we should check out what other members of the group had made. I scrolled down and recipes had me salivating.      Just when I joined, the theme for March happen to be PB&J (peanut butter and jelly). And I thought oh no here goes out the healthy eating... but as I read on further, Sarah Ellis (host of the group) mentioned that...
