734. Amla Pickle - Gujarati Style

Merry Berries    Berries in true sense are not the berries we all know... strawberries, mulberries, raspberries, blackberries etc. These in the botanical world are known as aggregate fruits. Berries are fruits produced from a single ovary. So in botanical sense tomatoes, cucumber, eggplants, bananas, pumpkins, melons are berries. Did you know that grapes too are berries? Yes they are.    However for our FoodieMonday/Bloghop #123rd theme, Berries we meant berries that we normally know. We had to prepare something using berries. Berries are small pulpy and often edible fruits. Before food was cultivated, berries were gathered by primitive men as a source of food, many animals feed on berries. It's probably presumed that during prehistoric time men may have sampled berries that animals consumed to supplement their diet.    Berries are considered power food, having the highest amount of antioxidants. Blackberries, goji berries and Indian Gooseberries (amla) to...

Happy Father's Day     A lot of importance, praise, appreciation, love and thought goes into celebrating Mother's Day. However, I feel that Father's Day has definitely drawn the short straw! It comes, cards are exchanged, gifts are bought and Father's Day is over. I feel that dads, papas, fathers, aboos, all over the world are less appreciated. I know my dad didn't help my mum to change nappies, bathe us, clothe us when we were young but he did so many other things for us(my brother, sister and me).    From what I gather, I always cried when my dad would come home for lunch even though I fed before his arrival.  So while having his lunch with his right hand, his left hand would be busy pulling the string to my hammock like 'godiyu' so that I may fall asleep.  My dad had protected us and provided us with whatever we required for our daily lives, right from school stuff to things we need at home. He protected us to the extend that we didn'...

540. Broa De Milho (Portuguese corn bread)

Image
A Portuguese bread     I have not been posting new recipes on a regular basis like before as I am updating my old ones. Whenever I write a post, I do read it again to check for grammatical or spelling mistakes. However, sometimes the eagle eye misses them. I am also updating the photos as my old ones were not good or too hazy. I still am not a professional photographer, but with my iphone, I try my best. Today's post is a Portuguese corn bread which was our February challenge for the We Knead to Bake  (started by Aparna of My Diverse Kitchen) members. Milho means cornmeal. This cornmeal is quite different from the one made in US. Its not sweet,it uses yeast, its a bit dense, with a nice crust and soft interior. This bread is usually served with a soup or stew but can also be served with eggs. I had it dunked in milk and it was really so yummy. It was traditional made by the peasants from white or yellow cornmeal and wheat flour. This bread is also very popular in the Span...

very nutritious - grandmother's remedy          What is raab? Raab is like a soup or porridge made from millet flour. I remember my grandmother having this when she would not feel like eating a normal meal. Lactating mums are given raab everyday, its a remedy for sore throats and colds. Its given to people recovering from an illness. Its a filling dish for elderly people who don't feel like eating a normal meal or cannot eat spicy food. Raab has loads of benefits. Its a comfort food and wards off cold. Prepare it when you feel like having something sweet and hot. Its nutritious so you can sip through it without any guilt.I love raab and find any excuse to make it. Here are some of the benefits of the ingredients used in making raab: Millet flour : easily digested, has alkaline properties, rich in magnesium, rich in protein and niacin, gluten free, the serotonin in millet has a calming effect on ones mood, it has low glycemic index, good for the heart, keeps chol...

247. eggless italian easter bread

Image
Happy Easter Easter reminds me of so many things. I remember the time we all would want to go for midnight mass at the local church in Mt. Abu. It was not for any religious reason, but it gave us an opportunity to be out of school at midnight and that was a cool thing to do. Easter meant loads of craft things to make when I was teaching, Easter eggs, bunnies, flowers etc. It made the classroom very cheerful. Easter means egg hunting at school, fun and the best part was we got to eat what we found. Easter in UK means huge chocolate egg filled with more tiny chocolates. Easter meant the rains would arrive soon in Kenya and this year too it rained a lot in Mombasa during the night. Years back Easter meant the the Safari Rally, but unfortunately for the past many years it comes and goes without anyone actually realising it. Safari Rally during Easter meant that a lot of people could watch it because of the holidays. Since they changed it, (don't even know when its held!) hardly anyone ...

202. sweet potato shaak

POWER PACKED TUBER Theme: Redo Old Posts BM#81 Week 4 Day 1    Sweet potatoes are pretty much in season all year round. Bake it, roast it, boil it, puree it. Whichever way you may prefer but have it. Sweet potatoes contain twice the amount of dietary fibers compared to a normal potato. It is rich in beta carotene, contains large amounts of Vitamin B6 which is beneficial in breaking down homocysteine (which contributes in  hardening the arteries and blood vessels). It contains a great amount of manganese and also is rich in Vitamin C and E. This humble, staple root is easy to cook and tastes great with a drizzle of lemon, salt, pepper or chilli powder.     My injured foot has stopped my trip to the market for a few days but Simon, the veggie guy bought some sweet potatoes from the market a few days ago. He kept on insisting I buy them, trying to convince me that its really good for health but his intention was to get rid of the huge quantity that he had boug...
