Happy Holi Everyone   Any festival celebration means food and lots of it. Food, fun, colour, rituals all make a successful celebration. If one is missing then the celebration or festival is not complete. Our #FoodieMonday #Bloghop group decided on #Holi as our 83rd theme . With Holi it means that I've been with this wonderful group for now a year. My first post for the group was a fusion Holi theme . I remember preparing the dish not knowing exactly how it will be received by the other members of the group. Must say they were a friendly group and immediately felt as though I'd known them for years. Its been a great journey of learning new recipes, new cuisines, how to improve photography, drawing strength from eachother in times of need and sharing our lives.       We are constantly chatting over whatsapp in spite of the different time zones. When its our bedtime, Preethi all the way from Singapore will send us a good morning message. When we are awake, Rupal in US ...

Happy Holi                   In recent years, many of the Gujarati communities in Kenya tend to organize Holi celebration functions, fun and frolic with colours, pichkaris, water filled balloons, delicious food and cool drinks. When I was growing up, I had not even heard of Holi. My first experience was when I went to school in Mt.Abu and got hit by a water filled balloon. It really hurt. Those days the balloons were filled with plain water. Now people fill them with coloured water.  I cannot remember anything special being made at home on Holi or any special celebrations. When I got married and came to Mombasa, no special celebrations were organised by most families and communities. The popularization of Indian Television series world over brought all the various festivals celebrated in North, East, South and West right to our doorsteps. With that came more families wanting to celebrate festivals like the way they are televised. Slowly ...

545. Thandai Kulfi (Ice cream)

Bura na mano holi hai    Its a bit early to post Holi recipes but I've just join a new  group #Foodiemonday #bloghop. Every Monday we post a recipe based on the chosen theme. The 31st theme is #Fusionthandairecipes. Its really really hot in Mombasa and the only thing I could think of was something extra extra cold. I decided to make kulfi with my thandai masala. Taking photos was not easy as the kulfi was melting too fast.               Holi, a festival of colors is celebrated by Hindus worldwide. In India its mainly celebrated by throwing, applying, drenching friends and families with different colour powders and coloured water. The true reason for celebrating is lost in all the colour throwing, drinking and partying. In reality, the eve of Holi also known as Holika is when an effigy of Holika is burnt to celebrate the triumph of good over evil. Prahlad, a devotee of Lord Vishnu did not burn in the fire while his aunt did(who ha...

400. thandai mousse

my 400th recipe    Hot weather means cold treats. Celebration time means sweet treat. Pamper me time means indulgence. Usually one cannot indulge in a curry or roti or rice. It usually means a sweet treat.... chocolates, ice cream, dessert etc. Whatever the reason, sweets and desserts are always a welcome treat. This recipe didn't get blogged when it was suppose to but better late than never. I made the mousse when I was writing out the wedding invitations. Instead of a typical indian sweet treat like ladoos, barfi etc I decided to make a mousse with a bit of all the goodness of typical Indian spices. This gave me the opportunity to try the recipe I had bookmarked for ages, Tarla Dalal's thandai mousse.   There definitely was a good reason why this recipe never got blogged before I went off to London for the wedding preparation. The reason is very clear today.    Also this is my 400th recipe on my blog and its fitting that I honour my favourite Indian cook, chef ...

107. thandai

yummy milk  I love milk be it plain, with chocolate, rose syrup, kesar, etc etc. The options are endless. Thandai is usually made during the Holi festival. I made thandai during Holi but didn't get a chance to blog it. Can't wait till next Holi. Anyway anytime can be thandai time. Its a healthy drink if made at home. I hate the commercially prepared one as it contains colour and essence and Not even sure if they are using almonds considering the cost of these nuts. The actual thandai is made by grinding all the ingredients to a paste and then is strained and squeeze in a muslin cloth to obtain the flavour. I think its a waste of fine and expensive ingredients. Hope you like my version of thandai, especially since you can make it in bulk and store in the fridge for further use. This a pure healthy recipe and not spiked with any substances! THANDAI  6 to 8 servings Thandai masala: 20 almonds 2 tsps aniseeds (valiyari) 2 tsps poppy seeds (khus khus) 8 big cardamom pods 2 t...
